Razor Stropping Basics

Basic Rules for Straight Razor Stropping

It is important to check your straight razor first if it is sharp before wet shaving.

:: Sharpen your straight razor gently, without hitting it or pressing it against the strop. The razor’s own weight should be enough to achieve proper sharpening. Don’t hit your razor on the strop or press it against it. You could cause it to break.

:: Use the entire surface of the strop. Move the razor skewed, from top to bottom and bottom to top.

:: Keep your razor flat on the leather of the strop while sharpening. Both the back and edge should lay flat on it. Don’t lay only the edge or part of the blade on the strop.

:: Pivot the razor on its back at the end of your sharpening stroke when you reach the bottom of the leather. Keep the razor’s back in constant contact with the strop. Repeat the same gesture when you finish the counterstroke at the high end of the strop. Don’t let the back of the razor leave the leather, or pivot the razor on its edge.

:: Keep the leather of your strop clean. Pass the palm of your hand over the leather before each sharpening session to wipe off dust or dirt.

:: Strop your razor for the first time only after it has been used several times. Dry your razor well after each use if it is made of carbon steel. A carbon steel razor will rust if not stored dry.

Stropping is used in the olden days but it is still vital today.

Wet-shaving has transformed a dreaded routine into a ritual I look forward to every day. Through my blog I would like to bring this experience to more classic shaving enthusiasts around the world.

Young Skin

If you are thinking to yourself that you would like to recapture some of your youth, then one of the first things you should be striving for is youthful skin.

Exfoliating with a facial scrub weekly will give the skin a glow as new skin cells are revealed and the appearance of wrinkles are diminished.

The health of our skin is a direct reflection of what our diet is. By eating foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin B complex, zinc and copper, you can really improve your complexion significantly.

By cleansing your skin at least once a day, you keep it free from harmful contaminants. Basic soap and water will do. And with a soft sponge as your scraper, you also gently remove stubborn dirt lodged in the pores of your skin.

Hydrating you skin from within will keep it plump and firmer looking. Drinking at least 8 glasses or 2.5 litres of water a day also flushes out harmful toxins which can cause premature ageing of the skin.

UVB stands for Burn – as these rays penetrate the top layers of the skin causing redness, inflammation and a lot of pain.

The popular ingredients can include the soothing Aloe Vera or even the highly hydrating avocado fruit. Some of these creams employ the use of olive oil, strawberries and even garlic root.

Most consumers shop for products at their local pharmacy, but this is the worst place to look.  Most look for the cheapest products, but those never work.

Stay away from the junk foods, deep-fat-fried stuff, sugary sodas, and baked goods made with refined white flour.

You can slow down wrinkle formation and even prevent it, if you use sunscreen early in your life. Use sunscreen that contains Zinc Oxide. It is better then those that have Titanium Dioxide.

Retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) help remove dead cells for smoother skin, stimulate collagen production to ease wrinkles, and even out skin tone. Sodas, sugar drinks, tea, (except herbal teas) coffee, or milk are not water.

Collagen and elastin are structural proteins in your skin. Collagen is more well-known and keeps your skin firm and tone. Elastin is what helps fight the effects of gravity.

The skin is a living and breathing organ that needs nutrients and oxygen to live. Vital nutrients and oxygen are carried with the blood to the small vessels in the dermis to feed the basal skin cells in the epidermis where new cells are formed.

The way to fight free radicals is by taking anti oxidants. By eating a healthy diet your skin will have anti oxidants to prevent skin oxidation.

Honey, in general, has excellent restorative properties for skin, and active manuka honey is a particularly beneficial variety. It’s rich in antibacterials and antioxidants, giving it the ability to nourish skin.

Skin naturally contains a host of antioxidants—substances such as vitamins A, C, and E, and coenzyme Q—that stop this damaging process in its tracks.

Any antioxidant skin care products worth their salt should be including Nano-Lipobelle H EQ10.

Stop The Spots

Age Spots, or Liver spots, are gray, brown or black spots on the skin that are caused by exposure to the sun. These flat spots, which are also called solar lentigo, occur on portions on the skin that see constant sun exposure such as the back of the hands or the forehead although they may be found in other less exposed areas also. Extremely common occurrences after the age of 55, these spots are considered harmless in spite of their somewhat cancerous appearance.

Age spots happen because of the skin pigment melanin. Melanin is the pigment that is responsible for protecting your under layers of skin from the suns harmful UV rays and is the stuff which makes people tan. These spots develop when extra melanin is produced in higher concentrations than normal, or when it becomes clumped together in certain sun exposed areas of the skin. Age spots can range from freckle size to more than a centimeter in length. They can also group together, thus becoming more prominent. Age spots are oftentimes accompanied by other symptoms of skin damage such as painless skin lesions and macules (flat patchy areas of discolored skin). Avoiding the sun, or using really good sun screen while in the sun is the surest way to prevent these unsightly spots from happening.

Liver spots happened because of the build up of ceriod pigments in older people. Liver spots are outward signs of free radical damage within as fats are pre-oxidized in the cells instead of the liver. Liver spots are generally not cancerous but medical advice should be sought if they began to change color, shape or size..

These unsightly age spots can be treated through several different methods which involve superficial destruction of the skin. Options include freezing, using acid, skin sanding, electric needle and laser therapy. Lasers are the preferred method because they are much less damaging to the skin due to their selective precision. Laser therapy also involves less pain and a quicker healing time than the other methods. Liver spots can also be bleached into obscurity or may be frozen away with liquid nitrogen in a procedure known as cryotherapy.

All of these procedures are a bit costly and only superficial in their results. Home remedies do exist that can be just as effective in removing these spots while at the same time being easier on your pocket book and better for your skin.

Here are some home remedies for age spots

Aloe: The gel of the Aloe Vera plant has many skin healing properties and will help fade the spots effectively. Apply Aloe juice or gel twice a day  for  two months and be astounded by the results.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Take two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of orange juice. Soak a cloth or a cotton pad with the mixture and secure to the area you want to treat.

Bilberry herb: This plant is  known to slow the aging process and is a powerful antioxidant that will stop free radicals in thiere tracks. 4 to 8 ounces of fresh berries or 80 to 160 mg of bilberry extract daily should keep the spots at bay.

Buttermilk: Buttermilk not only makes good pancakes, it has also been used as a skin and beauty aid for years. A dab of buttermilk on the spots will help the skin heal beacuase of the lactic acid within the milk.

Castor Oil: Apply this vitamin rich oil on the spots each morning and evening and rub in vigorously. The spots will be gone within a few months.

Chick Peas: Mash one third cup of garbanzo beans together with a dribble of water and smear the resulting paste on the spots. Leave until dry.

Dandelion Milk: Apply to spots 2 to 3 times per day. Great cure for warts too.

Gotu Kola: mix 1/8 teaspoon of this Chinese herb into a cup of herbal tea. Or, mix it with plain hot water along with 1/8 teaspoon of ginseng and a pinch of cayenne pepper. This should clear the spots within a few days.

Horseradish root: Mix 1 teaspoon of horseradish root with ½ teaspoon of fresh lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of vinegar and 3 drops of rosemary essential oil.  Dab your spots once or twice a day to exfoliate the top layer of your skin and lighten the spots.

Lemon Juice: Apply fresh lemon juice on your spots twice a day to help erase them in a few months. Just before to let the juice dry before going outdoors ( lemon juice will increase your skins sensitivity to skin).

A skin spot by another name…

Despite the moniker, old age is not necessarily the reason behind age spots: the darks splotchy areas common on the skin of people 55 or older. In most cases, the actual culprits behind these unsightly spots are the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Perhaps this makes the alternate term: sunspot, a more appropriate name.

Frolicking is the sunshine is not the only guilty pleasure that causes your skin to spot. Smoking, refined sugars, junky fast food and a diet that lacks vitamins are also accomplices in helping make these so called age spots appear on your skin, no matter how far away your retirement is. Perhaps they could be called poor living spots.

Lipofuscin is a granular pigment responsible for darkening our skin and causing these unsightly spots to appear. They come from body parts that aid in the digestion and elimination process, and are seen as “wear and tear” pigments that are given off. Our liver in one of the organs that produces lipofuscin, which is why the brown splotches on the skin are sometimes called liver spots.

Aside from being called age spots, sunspots and liver spots, these skin creatures have been also called brown spots and lentigo.  I do not know why they have never been called lipofuscin spots.

Since they are a skin condition the what ever you care to call them spots are easier to prevent than to get rid of. Eating a well balanced diet rich in antioxidants and low in saturated fats and refined sugars is good away from preventing the premature emergence of these unsightly spots. Orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes and leafy greens like spinach and collard greens will help keep your skin looking nice well into old age. These foods are rich in powerful antioxidants which will help fight off the free radical damage caused by the sun.  General clean, healthy living and keeping yourself out of the sun are also good preventative measures.

If your fun or sun loving lifestyle has already caught up with you, there is some good news. There are ways to fade these spots away by using several available products on the market today. A mild bleaching agent, hydroquinone, will help you lighten these spots along with scars and freckles.  Topical Vitamin A, found is some prescription versions of hydroquinone, will also help fade the scar away.

If you have a really ugly age spot in a very conspicuous space you might have to get “serious” with a more invasive removal technique. Chemical peels with 80 % glycol acid solution have become a popular skin treatment. This procedure simply removes several layers of skin to help downgrade the appearance of the spot.

Laser resurfacing is another procedure that you might want to consider to get. Sophisticated Lasers are used to burn the spots away. Laser resurfacing, however, only works when there is a contrast of colors. Dark spots on dark skin are more resilient to the blast of a targeted laser than dark spot on light skin.

Most age spots are harmless, but some just might be pretending to be harmless dark skin spots.  If a spot thickens and changes color, itches or bleeds be sure to have a dermatologist check it out.  Irregular spots that grow and spread are early signs of skin cancer.

The secrets of Japanese skincare have been unknown to the Western world until recently. With the advent of the internet you can now access many ingredients that were previously impossible to find.

A healthy diet and lifestyle obviously contribute as well but it is without a doubt the quality of the ingredients they use and one in particular that makes Japanese skincare so effective while still being completely natural.

The main special ingredient is called Phytessence wakame, a special extract from sea kelp which helps to keep your skin younger looking and beautiful.

One of its main attributes is that it attacks a harmful enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid in your skin. This acid helps to keep your skin firm and healthy and without it you get wrinkles and dark under eye circles.

It is rich in sodium, iron, potassium and calcium which are essential to maintain the skin’s moisture balance and keep it looking firm and healthy. It is also high in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 B12, which help to heal and soothe any areas of inflammation.

The result is healthier skin with more elasticity and firmness to return your youthful looks while helping to nourish deep down to maintain healthy skin and prevent the signs of aging from returning.

Other natural and chemical free ingredients that combine well are Cynergy TK from New Zealand sheep’s wool, Babassu wax from the Amazon and Maracuja passion fruit extract from Brazil.

These combine to give you a completely different type of skin care experience and one that allows you to have a sustainable way of staying younger looking in the future.

The Best Natural Skincare Ingredients Revealed For Healthier Revitalized Skin

Do you want to reverse the signs of aging and have healthier skin? The good news is that the best natural skincare ingredients can achieve that for you, you just need to know what to look for.

We seem to have reached a point today where all the manufacturers claim that their products are the best natural skincare ones available while the truth is something completely different.

Almost all mainstream creams and lotions, including the organic ones contain harmful chemicals like parabens and mineral oils. These are by-products of petroleum and can be very damaging to the long term health and well-being of your skin.

These help to fill out a cream and extend its shelf-life acting as preservatives with little concern for your health, just profits. Perhaps you are reading this because you have tried so many with little success as I did!

The truth is you do need to look harder to find the few truly genuine ones that really work at fighting the main causes of aging rather than simply cover them up. The benefits can be quite dramatic as you see and feel an improved skin texture and any lines and wrinkles soon start to fade.

Ingredients like Cynergy TK, Phytessence wakame, Jojoba oil, Macadamia oil, Babassu wax and Coenzyme Q10 will synergistically combine to raise your collagen and elastin levels while delivering natural nutrients to enhance your skins health and taking years off your appearance.

They contain powerful antioxidants to maintain healthy skin and fight the free radicals which damage healthy cells. This results in deep moisturizing to prevent any signs of aging from coming back while healing and soothing any irritated areas.

You also need to look to the online niche companies to provide these as they are not available in any mainstream products yet, and these companies always put their resources into creating the finest ingredients at an affordable price instead of wasting it on celebrity advertizing.

To have beautiful soft and healthy skin, look for the best natural skincare ingredients to ensure you stay younger looking in the future without compromising your health.

What to Look For to Get the Best Dry Skin Remedies

If you suffer from dry skin, you are probably very interested in finding effective remedies. Good  therapy can soothe your skin and make it soft and supple. If you are interested in finding effective remedies, here are a few ingredients that you should look for, and a little information on how they provide therapy.

Products called humectants are some of the best therapy products. They contain ingredients such as glycerine, and are effective because they actually pull moisture into the skin and keep it there. If you want the best results, select products which combine humectants like glycerine with a shield like silicone to lock in moisture.

Nut butters such as avocado and shea are among the best.. They provide effective dry skin help by introducing moisture and nutrients. Nut butters are usually quite thick and can be used for therapy as either a lotion or a hydrating mask. These products containing nut butters are popular and very easy to find in stores and online.

There are many herbs that are amazing for combating dryness. Look for herbs such as calendula to calm skin, aloe vera and tea tree oil to moisturize and lavender and oats to soothe. Soothing and calming itches is critical in dry skin therapy, because scratching can damage and lead to scarring and possible infection.

Dry skin can itch, flake and become red. Hydrating masks and moisturizing lotions can help. There are many excellent creams that are formulated for different areas of the body such as the face and neck area. Using creams is most important during colder months when forced air heating and dry air can cause serious skin condition problems.

If you want excellent dry skin remedies, consider using a day cream and a night cream as well as deep hydrating masks on a weekly basis. To truly get effective results, you should also increase the amount of water you are drinking. This is because these remedies will work best on skin that has enough internal hydration. People underestimate the effect hydration can have on their skin.

How to Firm Up Sagging Skin

If you are suffering from sagging skin, you need to know that fixing it is not as simple as finding the right skincare product. Sagging skin can be a sign of overall skin deterioration and aging so it is important to target the entire condition. A skincare philosophy that looks at the entire body and person inside and out can be the best way to heal skin safely and permanently.

Sagging skin happens as we age but dehydration and a poor diet can make the problem worse. Over time, people naturally lose the layer of fat under the skin. Sagging skin gets worse as collagen breaks down and sun damage continues. As you can see, a general skincare philosophy is needed that targets each of these problems.

The first step in a skin care philosophy that will target sagging skin is to view the skin as a living organ. It needs hydration to keep the condition of the skin as good as possible. By drinking enough water, skin may be firmed as the cells under the surface swell with moisture. It will keep the skin looking dewy, fresh and young.

Your skin needs more than just water, and a good skincare philosophy will help you approach your diet wisely. Sagging skin will feel and look better once it has received enough vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. If your skincare philosophy aims to receive enough rest and nutrients you will feel younger and healthier. This will be reflected in your skin, whether it is sagging or not.

The final part of your skin care philosophy looks at healing skin by using products designed to firm and plump your skin. It is important to note that since your skincare philosophy involves looking at your skin as a living organ that absorbs things through the surface using chemically laden creams and products to treat sagging skin is not acceptable.

A good skincare philosophy can be tailored to your needs and can really help repair and improve your appearance. Your skincare philosophy may seem like you are making massive changes to your lifestyle that may be hard to accommodate but if you make small changes in your skincare philosophy you will find it easy to adopt this new way of living without feeling deprived or inconvenienced.

You need to be aware that changing your entire skin care philosophy may take time but when you see the changes in your sagging skin that proper feeding and hydration will give you, you will be glad that you made those changes and feel that it is well worth the effort.

How Skin Care Products Change As You Age

When you are young, your skin is glowing and your choice of skincare products is simple and easy. You pick those skin care products which fight acne or provide moisturizing, or even protect against sun exposure. But then the first fine lines appear and suddenly you realize that you are in your forties and aging skin care is now more important than ever.

Aging skin care and your choice of skincare products often have to do with two main concerns: reducing the appearance of wrinkles and repairing sun damage and skin discoloration. Aging skin care may also deal with firming skin and skincare products which can tighten sagging skin.

You should start looking at aging skincare from a very early age. There is no time too soon to use skincare products that protect you against UV radiation. This is because aging skincare often means removing the age spots and discoloration that come from UV damage. Think about how the products you are using now can help when aging skincare becomes an issue.

Skincare products designed for aging skin care often include ingredients that other products do not. They may include collagen booster which help with aging skincare by repairing the bonds which keep skin firm and young looking. Aging skincare also may call for products which resurface and brighten the skin by exposing new skin cells sooner.

Products for aging skincare are often rich in moisturizers such as emollients. They reduce wrinkles by filling the skin with moisture and plumping skin cells. This fills in fine lines. Aging skin care may call for more moisturizing since declining hormone levels can lead to dry, dull skin. Look for skincare products specifically labelled as wrinkle reducing or moisturizing.

Other areas which aging skincare may need to address include the appearance of age spots and discolorations. These are caused by sun damage and it is important that you help stop or reverse the process before it becomes too advanced.

If you are beginning to see the signs of aging creeping up on you, do not despair. There are a number of excellent skin care products which can help you stave off the hands of time for a while yet and help you maintain a healthier and more youthful appearance for many years to come.
