Pigmentation: triggers and treatments

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is where the Melanocytes become overstimulated. Melanocytes are the skin cells which give our skin colour. The darker areas are Melasma and the lighter areas are called decolorations. Although these make up the skins pigmentation, they have to be treated differently. The lighter areas on our skin (decolarations) mean that our skin is not producing enough Melanocytes. The darker areas of our skin (Melasma) indicates the opposite, that our skin is producing too much Melanocytes.

Hyper-pigmentation can be the result of many factors, external or internal. The internal causes can be certain illnesses such as Edisons disease and some hepatic (liver) problems. Hormonal changes such as menopause and pregnancy, along with certain vitamin and mineral deficits are another cause of hyper-pigmentation.External factors such as exposure to sun and the use of some products that irritate the skin or cause skin photosensitivity can aggravate the problem. Cosmetics or fragrances containing alcohol compounded with exposure of your skin to the sun-increases your risk. Alcohol + sun = irritation and risk of developing hyper-pigmentation, so you should always use a suitable sun-block.

 How do I treat Hyper-pigmentation?

  • Hydroxy acids-Alpha hydroxy acids facilitate the shedding of dead skin cells and may even stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. They are found naturally as follows:
  1. Lactic Acid (Milk)
  2. Glycolic acid (sugar cane).
  3. Malic acid (found in apples and pears).
  4. Citric acid (oranges and lemons).
  5. Tartaric acids (grapes).
  • Vitamin C- or ascorbic acid, is a very potent antioxidant. Most studies on the effects of antioxidants on the skin have used this vitamin. In laboratory studies, large amounts of vitamin C reduced skin swelling and protected immune factors from sunlight. Vitamin C may even promote collagen production.
  •  Intense pulsed light – Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) pulses uses wavelengths of heated light which are directly aimed at the pigmented spots. The advantages of this technology include the fact that the pigment is able to be targeted precisely without damaging surrounding tissue. Skin pigmentation in the face, neck, chest and hands can be treated safely and effectively.

The light energy is gently delivered to the skin in pulses, through a delicate, computer-controlled handpiece. After your IPL treatment, the skin pigmentation or sun spots will gradually fade and slowly disappear, however in some instances the pigment may appear darker as it heals itself whilst in other cases it can flake up in a bid to eliminate the pigment in an external scab form.

The added benefit of the Palomar IPL Technology is that is also works to activate cells in the skin called fibroblasts which stimulate collagen remodeling and new collagen production. Effectively, this helps to rejuvenate the skin, improving its texture, visibly minimising pores and reducing superficial fine lines and wrinkles to reveal a more youthfully hydrated appearance.

  • Microdermabrasion-the resurfacing effect of microdermabrasion can achieve the following:
  1. Removal of abnormal tissue and rough skin
  2. Stimulation of new skin growth
  3. Stimulation of collagen and elastin production

Natural Cellulite Treatments and Cures – Smooth Skin Can Be Yours

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

People are constantly on the look out for natural cures for cellulite. After all, no one wants to spend thousands of dollars on cellulite treatments when there are simple, hassle free ways to cure cellulite from home. Here are 3 to name just a few.

Natural Cellulite Treatment #1

When you exercise for cellulite removal, you are doing two things: you are fighting cellulite & helping to get rid of it, and you are making yourself stronger and healthier over time. These cellulite exercises — cardiovascular and aerobic mostly — help to increase blood flow and circulation, which in turn helps prevent cellulite build-up.

Natural Cellulite Cure #2

Cellulite diets can be a huge factor in cellulite reduction, whether it be for the bad or for the good. A proper cellulite diet is one with very little junk food and plenty of helpful foods. Junk foods being sugar, processed foods, saturated fats, and/or anything else that comes in a box or tin can; good foods being fish, fish oils, lean meats (without fat), fat-free dairy, fresh produce, lots of water, vegetable juice, walnuts, peanut oils, etc.

Junk foods contain lots of calories and harmful toxins that routinely get placed in the body’s fat storage cells, eventually leading to the accumulation of cellulite. By removing these toxins and calories, you effectively get rid of cellulite.

Natural Way of Getting Rid of Cellulite #3

Intense lymphatic massage can do wonders for cellulite removal. Typically, cellulite massage is done by a specialist in a spa or clinic; however, it can in fact be done from home by someone that knows what they’re doing.

Basically, what happens is immense massaging pressure is applied to the area showing signs of cellulite — dimpled skin, cottage cheese looking skin, etc. Aside from the it’s obvious skin repairing properties, this intense pressure promotes increased blood flow as well as lymphatic drainage — two factors that play a particularly large role in the removal & creation of cellulite. When undergoing these anti-cellulite massage treatments, mild to moderate bruising should be expected.

Start using these 3 natural remedies today for less cellulite tomorrow! And remember, these are merely 3 of the natural cures for cellulite that are out there; there are dozens more.

Next, discover the hidden secrets of natural cellulite removal which only the best paid skincare experts know about. Whatever your cellulite reduction goals are, This Website Right Here will help you achieve them fast through the use of their jaw dropping anti-cellulite secrets. With these insanely powerful secrets, any woman can go from a cellulite-blob to a cellulite-free beauty in no time at all! Go to http://www.CelluliteRemovalMethods.com Now to Find Out More.

Adult Psoriasis Symptoms and Treatments

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Psoriasis is more common than people think and at least 3 percent of the population has the affliction. Adult psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis. As you read this article, try to think about anyone in your life who has had to deal with this disease. This disease is not fun and it’s genetic. If you yourself deal with adult psoriasis, then understand that there are programs out there to help you. After reading this article you will have a better understanding of psoriasis and how to treat and prevent it.

First, let’s talk about what psoriasis is. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder which affects the skin and joints.  The skin is such a weak but easily effective tissue on the body. It’s the weakest tissue of your body because it’s exposed to the outside. A lot of people have psoriasis and don’t even realize it. If you see a red, scaly, patch somewhere on your skin, you might be infected. Seek medical attention to determine what it is. Before you think that you’re safe because of your race or gender, think twice. All races and genders can get psoriasis.

Another thing you must realize is that adults are affected more than children .Though there isn’t a cure, the rough, red and raised skin that is itchy at times can be treated. You can find prescription meds that can reduce the symptoms. There have been some nice results using dead sea salts. Aloe vera, milk thistle and flax seed oils have been helpful as well. And remember that you’re not alone. Adult psoriasis, just like other diseases, is one at the top of researchers’ lists for finding a cure.

The psoriasis disease has its roots in genetics and is hereditary. To help yourself from not aggravating the skin condition, make sure you wear sun screen. If you have weak skin when it comes to chemicals, stay away from bleach and other cleaning supplies. Pay close attention to overexposure to the sun, as the ultraviolet rays from the sun can do eternal damage to your skin and assist the disease in forming.

In conclusion, adult psoriasis is very real and very scary. It isn’t something that is easy to get out of your mind, but it’s important to be able to enjoy your life and not let it dominate your consciousness. Remember that it is an autoimmune disorder, is genetic, occurs in adults more than children, and since the sun loves it avoid overexposure. Hopefully this article has given you a better insight to the skin disease that is affecting so many Americans.

Discover Five Different Ways To Effectively Save Your Skin Through Natural Acne Treatments

Friday, January 8th, 2010

You don’t need to wait anymore, or pop those zits. Many people spend too much on costly acne medicine, or professional work. If you can do it naturally, why wouldn’t you? So many chemical acne treatments are harsh on your skin. Here are five natural ways to make your skin zit-free.

1. Use soaps for faces that were made to battle acne! You can find these in body shops, or even in the local hygiene section of your local store. Some are sulfur-based, which help cure bad cases of acne. Wash your face with this twice a day, in the morning and at night. You need to get into the routine, regardless of any factors that might throw you off. This will help keep your face clean, as acne can’t continue to appear when it’s constantly being cleaned up and prevented! But don’t do this excessively because too much washing can lead the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, resulting in more acne.

2. Make sure to hydrate daily, no matter the temperature. You can find water anywhere, bottled or not, so drink up! It’s essential to you keeping your acne under control through controlling toxins by carrying them out your body. Don’t worry about the bathroom visits, as no one will notice it quite as much as a face full of acne.

3. Don’t squeeze your zits. It’s hard, but you’ll consequently damage your membranes located below the skin, allowing more sebum to crawl underneath your skin. This causes your acne to become infected, making it even less appealing than usual.

4. Pump those irons and stretch those legs! You’ll kick those toxins away with activities that make you perspire. Doing this is known as “detoxification,” which is a fancy word for getting those nasty toxins out of your body. You’ll also get in shape.

5. Above all, make sure you’re not rolling around in oils, dirt, and bacteria every night. Do this through changing out pillow cases and bed sheets at least once every week and a half. Otherwise, you’ll experience more acne outbreaks than you can handle-simply because you didn’t change what you were sleeping in.

You don’t need to scare yourself or your family with powerful acne medicine designed to scrape those pimples away. Trying these natural, gentle steps will let you take control of your face, without acne taking control of you.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Tricks: Best Rated Anti-Aging Wrinkle Creams and Wrinkle Treatments For Aging Skin

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Beauty procedures brings breakthrough in anti-aging solution, which means you can sleep away wrinkles; however an anti-aging skin care regimen can not be substituted.

Different age is characterized by its skin problems. It is important to understand what causes the problems so you can take preventative anti-aging measures as well as addressing the issues before it goes further.

Anti-Aging For Age Over 30s
The wound healing process and cell renewal activity start to decelerate. Skin’s ability to retain moisture decreases, especially around the eye skin areas. Fine lines and wrinkles appear as “pseudo wrinkles”. This is the signal that aging will official kick off and immediate remedies to the skin are required.

Try to focus on:

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Help cell renewal
Improve radiance
Protect against free radicals
Prevent sun-damage

What to do:

1. Clean, don’t strip – Dermatologists suggest that a pH 5.5 face wash helps gently cleanse the skin without irritating the eyes. It also helps preserve the natural and protective acid mantle of your skin. Products recommended: Cetaphil Skin Cleanser, Johnson’s Cleansing Lotion

2. Enhance moisture – Moisturizer smoothes fine lines and replenishes skin tone and texture. A good moisturizer should contain at least one of the moisturizing agents: Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramide, Vitamin B5 or Evening Primrose Oil. Products recommended: SkinCeuticals B5 Gel, Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Ultra Lift and Firm Moisture Cream, Atopalm MLE Cream

3. Emphasis on the eye skin area – Anti-wrinkle eye cream is a type of wrinkle cream especially made to treat fines and wrinkles around the eyes. Look for a product with Retinol, Growth Factors, Peptides or Caffeine. Products recommended: Kinerase Eye Cream, Dr. Brandt Lineless Eye Cream, Perfective Ceuticals Anti-imperfection Eye Therapy Cream with Growth Factor

Anti-Aging For Age Over 40s
Expression lines, forehead wrinkles, smile lines, fine lines and other facial wrinkles all come into play. Age spots and discoloration are also very common because skin’s self healing ability from sun exposure and environmental damage decreases.

Try to focus on:

Keep skin moisturized
Prevent and reduce wrinkles
Even skin tone or dull complexion
Lighten age spots and discoloration
Prevent sun-damage and environmental damage

What to do:

1. Anti-wrinkle ingredients can be divided into 3 groups according to their anti-wrinkle effects, where Group A contains strong irritant acid and belongs to prescription drugs, Group B is suitable for normal, combination, dry or oily skin, and Group C is best for sensitive skin.

Group A: Tretinoin (Retin A), Glycolic Acid

Group B: L-Ascorbic Acid, Q 10, Growth Factors, Peptides, Idebenone, Kinetin

Group C: Vitamin E, Algae Extract, Tea Extract

Choosing the products with anti-wrinkle ingredients that fit your skin type is half way of success. Spending more money on your anti-wrinkle products does not affect the status of your skin. What you use does. Products recommended: Perfective Ceuticals Divine Age Guardian Cream with Growth Factor, Afirm 3X by TxSystems, Kinerase Pro Therapy C8 Peptide Intensive Treatment

2. Dermatologists suggest that the higher concentration of the skin lightening ingredients the more effective. If your age spots are new, looking for a skin brightener with Bearberry (Arbutin) or Coffeeberry Extract. If you have had the age spots for sometimes, you may need a prescription-strength skin brightener or even a skin care procedure. Talk to your dermatologist about the best options for your skin. Products recommended: IS Clinical Hyperpigmentation Kit, DDF Intensive Holistic Lightener

Anti-Aging For Age Over 50s
The increase in Collagen breakdown will cause your skin become dryer, thinner and more sensitive. Deep wrinkles, sagging skin, drooping eye lids and thinning lips become pronounced.

Try to focus on:

Keep skin moisturized
Prevent and reduce wrinkles
Prevent and lighten age spots
Improve firmness and elasticity
Prevent sun-damage and environmental damage

What to do:

1. Topical application to increase levels of the Progesterone and Estrogen Hormones can produce anti-aging effects for women near or after menopause. Natural Progesterone and Estrogen supplements can be found in drug stores. Consult your doctor for the best options for both of your skin and health.

2. Expression lines and smile lines are not easy to eliminate by topical application of anti-wrinkle products. The good news is expression lines tend to respond well to the injections of Botox. Getting a Botox can dramatically improve horizontal forehead wrinkles, scowl lines between eyebrows and crow’s feet wrinkles.

3. You may also consider a surgical lift, lasers, dermal fillers, or chemical peels performed by medical professionals to improve the overall appearance. However, there are certain complications and ricks inherent. For this reason, it is important to choose a qualified and experienced medical professional for such procedures.

Diamond Microdermabrasion Treatments At Home

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010

While people usually go to the spa to get their microdermabrasion treatments, you now can pamper yourself right from your own home.  Microdermabrasion treatments at home are becoming quite popular.

These at home kits can be bought right online and usually include aluminum oxide, diamond or micro-crystal microdermabrasion cream, applicators, exfoliating wands or hand pieces, skin rejuvenators and repairing lotions.  These treatments are safe, gentle and require no recovery time.

Looking for a safe, Diamond Microdermabrasion treatment?
YES | NO

For a more gentle treatment you can try the diamond microdermabrasion.  Many women use this treatment because it requires no chemicals, no anesthesia and it works on almost all skin types.  It effectively gets rid of acne, wrinkles, age spots, stretch marks and other skin blemishes.  The diamond treatments use tips that are covered in tiny little diamonds to exfoliate the skin.   Then you vacuum away the dead skin cells with the microdermabrasion machine. This leaves no particles, so you can perform the treatment in delicate spots such as around your eyes and mouth. The diamonds combined with the suction exfoliates the skin, stimulates collagen production and increases the blood flow in the skin.

One such microdermabrasion home treatment is NuBrilliance.  This at home treatment combines diamond exfoliation with suction because true microdermabrasion happens with suction.  NuBrilliance minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, fine lines, cellulite, stretch marks, enlarged pores and uneven skin texture.  You will begin to experience improved tissue health, rejuvenated skin, healthy cell development, natural collagen and elastin production, unclogged pores and a clean, moisturized face.

Natural acne treatments

Acne is usually something you would associate with being a teenager, we all know how embarrasing it can be and have probably experienced getting spots just as your about to intend that all important party. However there is a more serious side to acne, and that is when a case of acne can get severe. some sufferers of acne may suffer all their life and some forms of acne can lead to scarring. how can you prevent this or lessen the effect of acne? A good way would be to look at natural acne treatments.

Why natural treatments when there are already plenty of acne drugs available from your doctor? well the answer is simple, the drugs available are synthesised man made pharmeceuticals. They may well work and help to alleviate or prevent acne but they can also carry a lot of unwanted side effects too. many pharmeceutical medicines are based on herbs and natural ingredients as it is, so why not go back to nature yourself for a solution.

There are all types of conventional natural treatments available, some come in the form of a cleansing liquid, gel or cream, while some can be taken orally. Most of these work in three ways, firstly they can act as an antibacterial agent helping to clean and fight the cause of the acne. secondly they can help alleviate inflammation and reduce the tenderness and swelling. thirdly they can control and neutralise the oily greasy skin that is common with acne.

All in all natural treatments have a great deal to offer the average sufferer of acne and should be well explored rather then opting into taking manmade pharmaceutical treatments. The lack of side effects alone in comparison to drugs available should make the natural option the right option. To find out the top 3 natural acne treatment products that will help you click here

Natural acne treatments

Even if you don’t use treatment there are still plenty of things you can do to keep you clean of acne and pimples.

Foods you should be eating:
Eat a high fibre diet which is essential for keeping the colon clean and clearing the body of toxins and unwanted wastes.
Eat plenty of raw foods such as nuts, almonds and cashews.
Eat quality protein rich foods such as beans, peas, lentils, eggs and fresh cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines.
Eat plenty of fresh fruit
Eat foods rich in zinc such as shellfish, soy beans, whole grains and sunflower seeds.

As you can now see there are plenty of good healthy food out there that will help your body stay clean and health but there are also plenty of food that you should stay away from in order to help reduce acne.
Avoid alcohol, butter, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, cream, fat, fried foods, hot and spicy foods, hydrogenated oils and shortenings, margarine, wheat, soft drinks and vegetable oils.
Stay away from all processed and pre-packaged foods.
Also try to avoid sugar. The reason being is that sugar encourages oil production and provides food for bacteria and yeast to grow.

Apart from eating well and use products to help with keeping acne away there are also lifestyle factors that you can follow to help reduce acne and pimples.
Drink at least eight glasses of bottled or filtered water a day. It may seem a lot but it’s worth it and will help you feeling good.
Keep your skin as free of oil as possible and shampoo hair regularly.
Wash your skin twice daily but gently, never rub. Over washing, vigorous scrubbing and repeated touching of the skin can make acne worse by overstimulating the sebaceous glands causing them to produce more sebum. In other words don’t be to rough on your skin.

I hope this was helpful and for a complete step by step guide to cure your acne for good, click here

Prevention and Treatments

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Yeast infection is the colonization of yeast fungi in body areas in such an amount and such a way that damages or symptoms are produced. Usually the yeast invades only body cavities and the lining of these cavities, but can in serious cases grow into deeper tissue layers.

Yeasts very often infect the vagina and outer female genitals. It also often occurs in the mouth, and is then called trash. The male genitals may be infected, but usually with fewer symptoms. There can also be an infective over-growth of yeast in the digestive tract, skin areas and the nose. Small children often get afflicted in the diapered area, and this is commonly called diaper rash. Diaper rash can also be caused by irritation from urine or stool, from food allergy, from allergy against washing media, or from a combination of several factors.

Sometimes these microorganisms attack several body areas at the same time, such a systemic infection is often called candidiatis. A systemic yeast infection can develop into a serious condition where the yeast invades deeper layers of the skin, the deeper tissues of several organs and even the blood stream.

The systemic variant usually occurs in patients with bad immune defense, like HIV patients, diabetics or patients weakened by systostatic or steroid medication.

CAUSES OF THE DISEASE

Usually species of the genus Candida, and especially the species Candida albicans, are the infective agents. These yeasts are normally found in the body, but the amount is held down by the normal body chemistry by friendly bacteria inhabiting the skin and body cavities, for example bacteria producing lactic acid (the genus Lactobacillus). When the yeast become infectious, it often changes from a round cellular form to a thread-like or branched form that can grow into tissues.

Click for Say Goodbye to Bacterial Vaginosis Forever

A disturbed bacterial flora in the skin and body cavities can make it easier for the yeast to grow excessively and infect. The skin, the outer genitals and body cavities like the mouth, vagina, and the colon contain the bacterium types Bifidobacteria and Lactobacteria, and these bacteria hold the growth of the yeast in check.

Use of antibiotics can kill these friendly bacteria and make it easier for the yeast to grow. A too eager use of antibiotics in children can cause a chronic overgrowth of yeasts in the body that will affect the health negatively long into adulthood.

Use of corticosteriods can also make a person susceptible for attack. Asthma patients using inhaled coricosteroids often get afflicted in the oral cavity.

A too eager hygiene, using bacterial killers, can kill friendly bacteria and cause a yeast attack to occur. However, lack of washing can also cause yeast infection.

If skin areas are constantly held wet or sweaty, Candida infections can easily occur, for example in diapered areas of small children or feet covered by tight shoes during long walks.

A diet with an excess of sugar and other carbohydrates may nourish the yeast and cause an infective growth of the yeast.

Mental and physical stress can decrease the effect of the immune defense against yeasts and make a person more susceptible for attack.

THE SYMPTOMS IN VARIOUS BODY PARTS

Yeast infection in the female genitals gives itching or burning sensations in the vagina and genital lips, red rashes in the external female genitals and a whitish badly smelling discharge. The discharge may also be the only symptom.

Attack in the male genitals often gives itching sores around the base of the penis head. There may also be a smelling whitish fluid substance present that is different in consistence from the white smegma normally produced by glands in the same area. Red rashes with scaling can be present on the outer genitals and especially on the underside of the penis.

In the mouth, yeast infection gives sores covered with a whitish layer that give an itching or burning pain, so called trash. There can also be white or yellow layers on the tongue without any sores underneath or other symptoms. One often sees cracks at the corner of the mouth.

Attack in skin areas will give symptoms like rashes, itching, sore areas oozing fluid and blisters. The symptom will most often be seen in areas like the under-side of the shoulders, the inner side of the elbow, skin folds, in the pelvic region and other areas that are somewhat hidden.

Yeast infection in the digestive tract can give symptoms in the whole digestive tract from the esophagus to the anus. Symptoms that can occur are problems and pain during swallowing, breast pain, bloating, cramping, excessive gas production, diarrhoea, itching and sores in the rectal opening and lactose intolerance.

An overgrowth of yeast in the digestive tract or a generalized attack produces substances that can poison the whole body, and give symptoms also from body parts that are not directly infected, like: rashes, hives, and itching in the skin, allergic reactions in many body parts, fatigue or lethargy, muscle weakness, bone pain and nervous symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS

Yeast infection is often diagnosed by a specimen from the affected area. The specimen is then cultured to investigate the microbial flora. Often bacterial infections give the same symptoms, especially from the vaginal area, and the specimen will also help to decide the cause of the symptoms.

STANDARD TREATMENT

Yeast infection is commonly treated locally at the infected area with anti-fugal substances like clotrimazole (canesten), nystatin, fluconazole, ketoconazole, tioconazole (GyneCure), terconazole (Terazole), Monazole, miconazole (Monistat, Micozole), butoconazole (Femstat) and gentiana violet.

By vaginal infection tablets, creams or suppositories containing one or more of these substances are usually inserted into the vagina. Men having genital yeast infection or sexual partners of women with infection can be treated with local cream based on the same substances.

Some of the drugs, like fluconazole, are also used orally as a systemic medication.

For more severe cases the substances amphotericin B, caspofungin, or voriconazole is often used.

By localized infection, for example in the vagina, the pharmacological products usually take away the infection very effectively.

These products do not however take away the susceptibility for new infections, and can be less effective when the infection is spread in a more diffuse manner.

Lifestyle measures and natural supplements can be useful to reduce the susceptibility for yeast infection and to help cure when standard treatment does not fulfill this goal.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT

- Garlic helps to kill yeast, and can be used as an oral remedy for yeast infection.

- Flushing with a boric acid solution can help to kill yeast and rinse body cavities. Suppositories containing boric acid can also be used to kill yeast in the vagina or anus.

- Diluted tea tree oil may help for vaginal yeast infection by using it locally.

- The fatty acid caprylic acid can kill yeast, and a supplement of this acid may help against yeast infection.

- Propolis is an antibacterial substance made by bees. An oral supplement or local application of a propolis solution has shown to be useful against yeast infection.

- Cranberry juice helps against bacterial infection in the urinary tract and may also help to kill yeast by making the urine more acidic.

- Lactoferrin is a protein that can bind to iron and hold it away from pathogenic bacteria and yeast, and this will impair the growth of these organisms. The protein is naturally found in milk and in secretes in many parts of the body. It is a part of the natural defense against microbes.
